In space, under siege by fighter-class ships, ARC-270 Starfighters were deployed in full numbers to take out enemy fighters as V-Wings were to swarm the area and create crossfire confusion. When the transport landed, the troop bay door would open and let legions of Clone Troopers out onto the battlefield. The next step was to get the gunships back to carry vehicles such as the AT-TE IIs and the TX-4001 Jedi Speeders. The usual method of full troop deployment was by first launching gunships to clear the area of enemies, so that the Star Destroyer could land. As its boarding ramps were wide and level when on the ground, Clone Troopers and other land-based troops could easily be deployed without descending a high ramp, being carried by a smaller transport, or being escorted by vehicles. It was the largest vehicle before the creation of the Supernova that could operate on land. The craft was truly a flexible capital ship as it was heavily armored, well shielded, and carried a heavy armament, complement, and maneuverability. The Republic Assault Ship had to fire from the front and the Imperial Star Destroyer had to fire from the sides. The shield generators were heavily armored and the hyperdrive system was similar to the ones equipped to Republic Assault Ships in the First Clone War.Īn advantage to the “Star Destroyer” was that it held proton torpedo tubes on three sides of the craft, so it could fire to nearly anyplace that a capital ship could be. Different from the other lines of Star Destroyers was the alignment of turrets, which were arranged to better protect critical areas from starfighter attack. It was shaped in a classical wedge, as most assault ships and star destroyers were, and supported two shield generators in a geodesic style, not dissimilar to the Imperial-class Star Destroyer. The “Star Destroyer,” as nearly everyone called it, was 100 meters shorter than an Imperial-class Star Destroyer, and it carried a crew of 10,000. A Star Destroyer! Look out, the Imperials!
